Director's Message

Welcome to the website of the Geohazards Research Centre (GRC) at King Abdulaziz University (KAU). The Center was founded in 2014. Before that the center used to be a research unit in the Faculty of Earth Sciences (FES).

Geohazards Research Centre (GRC) is one of other centers at KAU that deals with Climate Change Research, Environmental Studies, Emergency and Disasters.

GRC is an interdisciplinary group of researchers and postgraduate students from KAU and from some collaborating international universities that focuses on the geological hazards in Saudi Arabia, such as volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, landslides, and flash floods.

The center has just finished the first phase of an international project to study volcanic hazards of the Cenozoic Saudi Volcanic fields (Harrats). A second stage of the project is under planning.

One of the main goals of GRC is to link researchers with different disciplines in KAU with GRC researchers to study different types of geological hazards especially Flash floods in coastal areas. The other main goal of GRC is to work with other researchers in KAU and worldwide, to evaluate consequent effects of geological hazards on the society and help to advice on areas that are related to managing, communicating, and mitigating the effects of possible future geohazards. The other main objective of GRC is to educate others about different types of geohazards, focusing on the sector of civil defense authorities

GRC is administered through a board council, headed by KAU Vice president of Postgraduate studies and research. The center has a scientific advisory committee with members from the civil defense authority and Saudi Geological Survey. Other members of the committee are from different scientific institutions in Saudi Arabia.

Please contact us at ghrc@kau.edu.sa for more information about the center.
